The virus has made its way to the United States and is spreading among some people, according to a new study.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that the infection rate in the United Kingdom and Canada had reached a record high, and that a record number of people were infected.
In the United states, the number of new cases has nearly doubled, and cases are now spreading more quickly than in years past, the CDC said.
It said some of the cases have been traced to injection sites in the southern states of Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Texas.
CDC director Dr. Tom Frieden said Tuesday at a news conference that while the new cases are a reminder of the dangers of exposure to the virus, the country is doing much better now.
He said the number and frequency of new infections and deaths are increasing in response to the coronavirus outbreak, and he warned that more cases are still being diagnosed.
Frieden said the U.S. is on track to reach the nation’s first nationwide pandemic, a term used to describe the rapid spread of a virus that has infected more than 30 million people.
We have a virus with an extremely rapid spread that is becoming a global threat, he said.
